UMQHELE SECONDARY MARKET DAY INSPIRES ENTREPRENEURSHIP THANKS TO CUMMINS SOUTH AFRICA
In partnership with Cummins South Africa, we witnessed the entrepreneurial spirit come to life at Umqhele Secondary School during a dynamic Market Day event. Learners from Grades 9 and 10 proudly showcased their business ideas, applying what they had learned through the JA Be Entrepreneurial Program, made possible through the support of Cummins South Africa.
The school grounds were buzzing with excitement as students sold products and services they had developed themselves from concept to customer. It was a proud moment to see their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills on full display.
To celebrate their hard work and innovation, the top three businesses received prizes, adding extra motivation to an already inspiring day. The winning team wowed the judges with their tasty sandwich and car wash business, earning over R1,000 in just one day, a remarkable achievement that speaks to their initiative and drive.
The Be Entrepreneurial Program equips young people with more than just knowledge, it fosters the confidence and critical thinking needed to thrive in real-world settings. Through hands-on experiences like Market Day, learners get to see their ideas come alive while gaining a deeper understanding of how business works.
We’re grateful to Cummins South Africa for their continued support in helping us inspire and prepare youth with the skillset and mindset to build resilient and thriving communities.
“My most memorable moment was Market Day. It gave me first hand experience of what real competition feels like and taught me how to perform under pressure. The most rewarding part of the program was collaborating with my team. It helped me grow personally, professionally, and mentally.
This program has taught me to be a risk-taker, to think innovatively, and to always maintain professionalism in everything I do” , said Lesego Setena, grade 9 learner, Umqhele Secondary school.
